Additional Plan Information

Flexibility

With Blue Advantage®, you have a range of benefit plan choices. All of the plans offer the security of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina® (BCBSNC®) major medical coverage along with predictable copayments for doctor visits, urgent care & emergency room services and most prescription drugs.

You decide how much you want to share in the cost of your health care and what monthly premium is right for you. Regardless of your budget, there is a plan that meets your health care needs. You may also qualify for a healthy lifestyle discount, which could reduce your premiums.

Freedom of Choice

With Blue Advantage®, members have access to North Carolina's largest network of medical providers. Many of the best doctors, hospitals and pharmacies are at your fingertips. Just display your BCBSNC® ID card at the providers' office and pay your copayment or coinsurance. Your in-network doctor handles all administrative details and files all claims...no messy paperwork for you. Additionally, members have the freedom to go outside BCBSNC's® network in exchange for higher out-of-pocket costs and filing your own claims. If you need medical treatment outside North Carolina, just call the BlueCard PPO number on your BCBSNC ID card or search the BlueCard provider directory at bcbsnc.com.

Applicants may choose to purchase coverage for their children only. Children will receive full Blue Advantage® benefits, including coverage for well-child and well-baby care. Applicants can also select maternity coverage for an additional premium at initial purchase, renew a policy (provided the policy has been in effect for at least six months) or if they have a family status change.

Value Added Features

As a Blue Advantage® subscriber, members have access to a variety of resources and programs just as other BCBSNC® enrollees. Designed to help maximize their health care experience, these programs include Member Health Partnerships, which helps members manage health conditions like asthma and diabetes, and Blue Extras, which provides member discounts on everything from vitamins to health club memberships.

Eligibility

Residents of North Carolina under the age of 65 and not qualifying for Medicare are eligible for coverage under Blue Advantage®. Enrollment processing takes approximately 30 days. Applicants may need health insurance to cover this waiting period. Please refer to the information under Short-term Health Care to address these needs.
